Member Feature: Sandra Hults

Editor's note: Each month we'll be featuring a member of the illuminate community so that we can all get to know our writers better. We're excited to "meet" all of you and cheer you on with your writing goals. Give a warm welcome to Sandra, our featured member this month.

Who I Am:

Sandra Hults was born in Toledo OH, where she still lives with her supportive husband and daughter. She is the self-published author for the brilliant fantasy world of Maeseloria. Her first novel in the series, Maeseloria: Birth of Light, was published in 2012, and the world has continued growing since then. An avid music junkie, she can often be found rocking out to anything from musicals to pop to contemporary and classic rock, especially when she is writing. She also enjoys spending time with her family, going to gaming conventions and catching up on the latest reads from her favorite authors.

So, that's the official author type introduction. Life keeps me very busy. I work a full-time job, two if you count the writer in me, three if you count raising the amazing kid in my photo. I love being able to pay forward everything I've learned about writing on my journey. I love being able to pay forward what I've learned about self-publishing and marketing since 2012. I feel like I'm finding my feet and my confidence in my craft this last year. I am finding, as I grow that I love coaching and teaching too. Like a lot of you, I struggle with confidence but put on a brave front and soldier on. The best advice I can anyone who pursue writing: Keep going. Don't be discouraged. You will falter. That's okay. Trust your instincts and your voice. You will get there.

What I Write About:

I write a fantasy series. This past October I released my 6th book in the series, Guardian's Redemption. I spend every November writing my rough draft for the next book. This year was no exception. Fate's Divide, is my current work in progress. I'll begin the revision phase of that book after the holidays. I also host a blog that I bounce between writing short fiction snippets from the realm and personal reflections on life and its own bag of insanity.

My Favorite Piece of Writing By Me:

Here is an excerpt from "Four days…and some discoveries." (click here to read the whole post):

When other girls my age were going to bars, clubs, getting shit face wasted, I was having a baby. Please don’t misunderstand, this is not a diatribe of regret. I wouldn’t trade a single giggle or a single ‘good morning Mommy’ cuddle for that life. It just forces you to look at yourself harder. It forces you to grow up because that little person is dependent on you. No one else. You. The sun rises and sets on you for them. That’s the reality of motherhood when they’re little.

“You know nothing, Jon Snow.” To any fan of Mr. Martin’s work, you know that line. It still makes me snicker. At 22 I knew nothing. I didn’t know what I wanted. I didn’t know what was right for me, for my life and yet, I kept plugging along for that little girl. I have watched her grow, nurtured her. I taught her to read. I taught her to tie her shoes. I taught her it was okay to cry when she needed to. On the flip side, I taught her that not everything or everyone was worth crying over. (I see all of you moms of little girls right now nodding your heads. I promise, it gets better but don’t wish it away either.)
